Oro : Felipe Tascón
Nature of Things is pleased to present Oro, an exhibition of paintings by Dallas-based artist, Felipe Tascón, opening Saturday, September 5 from 4-6pm at Jardín, 2608 Dunlavy St, Houston, TX 77098.
Felipe Tascón’s poetic and meditative paintings begin loosely and quickly, acrylic onto paper. When a drawing becomes a painting, Tascón formalizes the work, translating the shapes and colors into a gridded system of geometric abstraction, at times resembling quilts, mosaics, or weavings. The surface of the finished painting is slightly three dimensional, with recesses into the surface; it is hard to tell if the painting has been incised with a blade, cutting through the layers of paint, or if they have been precisely built up from the surface around them. Many of the painting surfaces contain penumbral traces of the layer below.
Tascón titled the exhibition “Oro” alluding to the poetically insoluble nature of gold in acid. Tascón states: “Painting to me feels like a search for alignment with that thing: the incorruptible, the impenetrable.” Oro is also a palindrome, a wonderfully balanced word. Painting can also be a balancing act. Tascon’s paintings, in their geometry and color, find balance, while still emanating a glimmer in the dark.
Felipe Tascón (b. 2002, Dallas, TX) has had solo exhibitions at Den Uferdige Institusjonen and the Cube Space in Alfred NY. He has been a resident at Henry Street Studio, Guldagergaard Ceramics Residency, and Den Uferdige Institusjonen Studio. He recieved a BFA from Alfred University in 2025, He was recently a recipient of the Dallas Museum of Art’s Clare Hart DeGolyer Memorial Fund. The artist currently lives and works out of Dallas, Texas.
